Sideboards

A sideboard earns its floor space by doing real work — storing linens, housing a bar setup, holding the sound system, parking everything that's not allowed to pile up on the dining table. The best ones look effortless about all of it.

The sideboards on Alloy & Ash are made by woodworkers and design studios building in small shops. Most build in 7–10 weeks, and nearly all accommodate custom width, hardware finish, and interior configuration.

    Sizing

Standard sideboards are 30–36 inches tall and 54–72 inches wide. Credenza proportions — 28–30 inches tall, 60–84 inches wide — work better in dining rooms with lower ceilings or open floor plans where a lower horizon line opens up the space visually. Depth of 14–18 inches is standard: enough to house stacked plates and serving ware without projecting far from the wall.

    Interior configuration

Adjustable shelves are the most flexible option for mixed storage. Deep drawers along the bottom handle linens and serving pieces better than shallow ones. A combination of drawers below and adjustable shelves behind doors gives maximum versatility for most households.

    Materials and hardware

Walnut dominates because it ages so well — the grain makes even simple slab-front doors look considered. White oak is a strong second for contemporary rooms. Painted finishes in matte sage, warm white, or black read more furniture-like for rooms where the wood grain might compete. Hardware — brass ring pulls, long bar handles in blackened steel, or simple leather tabs — is the easiest single detail to customize and has an outsized effect on the room.
