Benches

An entryway bench is one of those pieces that looks casual and works hard. It's where you sit to take off shoes, where bags land when you walk in the door, and the piece that — if it's right — makes the first impression of a home feel considered rather than assembled.
The benches on Alloy & Ash are made by woodworkers and upholstery shops who take entryway furniture as seriously as the pieces in the main rooms.
Sizing
An entryway bench that reads proportional against a standard 8-foot entry wall is typically 36–60 inches wide and 18–20 inches tall. Deeper benches (18–20 inches of seat depth) are more comfortable for actually sitting; shallower benches (14–16 inches) work in tighter entries where you need to conserve floor space. A bench with a lower shelf or integrated hooks gives the piece double duty — seat plus storage.
With storage vs. without
A simple bench with a lower shelf is the most versatile: open below for shoe storage or baskets. A lift-top bench with interior storage holds umbrellas, scarves, and seasonal items. An upholstered bench with no storage is the most visually refined. The right choice depends on how much the entry is expected to absorb day-to-day.
Materials
Upholstered benches in performance fabric or leather are the most comfortable and popular choice for entryways. Wood-top benches in walnut, white oak, or painted finishes are more durable and easier to wipe clean — important in a high-traffic entry. Metal-frame benches with wood seats are the lightest visually and suit modern and industrial-leaning interiors.
